Terryl and Erin are getting married next month and we wanted to go make some image for them to use for the engagement, and announcements. We waited for a couple of months to catch a break in 110`F heat here in valley of the sun. Unfortunately that day never came and so we all went out and braved the heat. We went and checked out a new spot near a corn and alfalfa field and made some backlit magic around sunset. I hope so much that they enjoy these images as much as I do:

Dallas and Andrea | Snowflake Arizona Temple Wedding Photographer

My brother, Dallas and Andrea got married at the LDS temple in Snowflake Arizona last spring. It just barely occurred to me that I never got to blog their wedding. We went through alot to make these images so they definitely need to be shared.
We work up early early (like 4:30am early) the day of their wedding to take care of their portraits. We later found out what a good move that actually was. It was pretty breezy in the morning when we were doing pictures but the wind kept picking up throughout the day. By the time their wedding was over and they came out of the temple that afternoon the gusts truly made us feel like we were in the middle of a hurricane, pictures would not have been an option.

They are such a beautiful couple, and Andrea is such a sweetheart. We all love her so much and are so grateful that she is now a part of our family.

It is such a blast to get to go back to my hometown to photograph weddings. I grew up in Pinetop and love getting oppurtunities to go back. Stephen and Emily had the most terrific wedding day. Everything was perfect. Their wedding ceremony took place on the banks of Rainbow Lake in Lakeside. I love it when the stars align for great images. The location was incredible, as you can see from the images, combined with the perfect amount of cloud cover, perfect time of day, and a good looking couple it would be hard not to make incredible images.

I've been looking forward to getting these images up since we made them the week of Thanksgiving. A great looking couple at a gorgeous venue and great light to work with...it's like the stars were aligning for incredible images.

Their wedding was beautiful and the bride and groom were stunning. The next day the happy couple celebrated and gathered with their friends and family at the amazing Copperwynd Resort in Fountain Hills

I'm always excited when I know I get to work with other wedding professionals that I'm familiar with. All of the flowers and centerpieces were arranged by Vicki Sorensen. I've done more than a half dozen weddings with Vicki and love to see the floral creations that she comes up with for every event, and saying that her work adds to the quality of my images would be an understatement.

The following video is by Shaun Martineau of Capture the Memory Wedding Films and I love his work. The bride and groom and the photographer and videographer end up spending alot of time together on the wedding day and Shaun was really cool to work with.

Kenny and Kristen's is a great love story. They were high school sweethearts, When Kenny turned 19 he went to serve a 2 year mission for his church, during that time Kristen waited for him...well she did more than just wait she planned and organized their wedding. Everything was set and booked months before Kenny was even home from his mission.
These guys had so much fun together and it was so easy to photograph how in love with each other they are as you can see from the photographs.

They were married at the Mesa Arizona LDS Temple. Later that afternoon they had a ring ceremony and a reception at the Wright House in Mesa.

Wedding Tip : Let them eat cake!

I have yet to attend a wedding that didn't have cake. It's a staple of event, as universal as white dresses and tuxedos. Here are a couple of tips about the wedding cake.

It's preferable to keep the cake table away from a corner and not too close to a wall. The reason for this is purely photographic. It will likely be indoor and or dark at the time of the cake cutting which will necessitate flash photography. If the cake table and bride and groom are close to a wall the flash will cast a big ol shadow behind them. If the cake table is away from the wall, then this shadow won't be so apparent.

Cupcakes. More and more often I have been seeing cupcakes used to supplement the wedding cake. This is nice if your reception is more of a "come and go" type of event where some guests might not be staying long enough to be there for the cutting of the cake but would still like to have some baked sugary goodness.

Cake cutting. More often than not I can rely on a small degree of panic from the bride and groom when it's time to cut the cake....
"HOW DO WE DO THIS?!?!?"
Don't stress about it. Nobody can see what you're doing on your side of the cake anyways. It doesn't have to be pretty, just cut out a couple of small bite sized pieces that you can feed to each other. Don't ask for help from your coordinator or caterer because neither of us really want that person to be in your cake shots, do we? How "nice" you are to each other when you feed each other is totally up to you, always careful not to get any on expensive gowns or suits but a little frosting on the face is always fun!

Do you like the title on this post? One of my favorite things to do is to make celebrity couple names for my siblings and the significant others....yes another one of my siblings is getting married this year! ....next month in fact. My favorite (and only) sister Ashley got engaged this summer to Scott. We are all so excited for them.
We made some images together in September but she made me wait until her announcements were out until I could post them!
When I do engagement portraits I like to use slightly longer lens and really concentrate on filling the frame with the couple.

I can't believe it has taken me this long to get Christian and Jessi's wedding to the blog. Their wedding in Sweden is certainly the greatest photographic experience I've ever. I had the pleasure to meet Christian and Jessi a couple of months prior to their wedding at Rich and Jackie's wedding. We all had so much fun at Rich and Jackie's wedding that Christian asked if I would be interested in photographing he and Jessi's wedding in Sweden. As you can imagine I responded in the affirmative. So I hurried to get my passport expedited so that I'd have it in time for their wedding and made plans to travel to Goteborg Sweden for the better part of a week in June.

For whatever reason Arizona is really relaxed about updating your license. Until today the picture on my license was the same one taken when I got my learning permit when I was 15 years old. I got a letter in the mail a few weeks ago letting me know that if I didn't update my picture, my license would be suspended. Also I have to renew my passport for a wedding abroad coming up this summer and thought that a suspended license would reflect poorly on my passport application process.

So I put on a good shirt and drove all over creation to find a DMV today, and the above image is what I got for my $4.00 renewal fee.

I got this in the mail a few weeks ago. I know it's nothing that special...I suspect everyone get's one for registering their business with google, but still thought it was fun. It's a decal that you can put in your window but as I work out of my home I don't know where I'm going to put it. That crazy barcode looking thing in the bottom right corner can be read by certain types of cell phones and can direct you to my webpage and contact information. Thanks Google.

I've been looking forward to Kevin and Valerie's wedding for a long long time. I got to do their engagement pictures over a year ago. September and October were so crazy busy for me I am just going through my photo-library now and trying to catch up on the blogging I got behind on. While I have been shooting mostly weddings this year it really is nice to get a break from white dresses and tux's and chase little kids around a park, every once in a while. These guys are from my hometown and I went to high school with their Mom and Aunt. I really think it's great when parents recognize the importance of getting great images made of their kids. These kiddos were so adorable and I'm so glad I was able to catch a couple grins from the Nyla.

The Bloomer kids all got organized for a big family photoshoot as part of a gift for Grandma and grandpa.

One of the things that makes me most nervous in photography is a group of kids. You never know what they are going to be like and sometimes I know they are looking at me thinking "I dare you to make me smile,'cameraboy'!"
But these lil guys were great and I was thrilled that we got all of them to look at the camera at the same time.

I'm thinking about writing a book about the ethical dilemma of letting kids fall while I'm photographing them (look down a couple posts on my blog, same kinda shot in almost the exact same place with a different family).

Meet the K, family.
We went out to Freestone the other week and got some great fall family portraits done.

This inevitably happens with little guys in this age range where they can absolutely sit up on their own but if you put them on slope they don't quite have the balance to stay upright. And herein lies my dilemma: I am within an arms reach and the closest person to him. Do I do the humane thing and reach out and grab him? or do I keep my face behind the camera and capture the fall. The photographer beat out the humanitarian in this case and decided to capture the fall.

Josh + Kym | The Farm at South Mountain | Wedding

Josh and Kym were married at the Farm at South Mountain back in September. It was a beautiful day in a beautiful place with some beautiful people. Kym and I worked together at the University of Phoenix (our office building was just a mile up the road from the venue).

The venue was beautiful and had this little curtained room where the bride could observe her guest arrive and be seated before the ceremony began.

Just in case you are wondering... It's not a good idea to take pictures at Ecanto Park in Phoenix on a Saturday when the weather is starting to get good. This is exactly what Cory, Sarah, and I tried to do. As soon as we got there we knew it wasn't going to work...there were people EVERYWHERE! Luckily our schedules all allowed for us to retry a couple days later in the middle of the week and we had much more favorable and photographable <=(is that a word?)conditions.
Here are just a few of my favorites:

My friend Heidi emailed me last week to let me know that an image I had made for her little sister's engagement was used in an issue of "Creating Keepsakes" magazine.

Shanna and AJ had a beautiful wedding in Snowflake Arizona. While neither of them are from Snowflake they preferred (as did I) to have their wedding in the cool air of the mountains rather than triple digits of Mesa. Their ceremony was earlier in the day and their reception was beautiful and in the middle of the day so it made for some awesome natural light images.

It was so much fun to be with these two on their wedding day and especially a few days before when we did some of their wedding portrait work.

I made a little slideshow of the first set of images that we took together at the temple. Something I have been wanting to do for a while was to stage the "first look" and capture the moment in image. Jaylen arrived at the temple a few minutes early and was hanging out with me on some of the steps on the East side. Once Blaire arrived I coordinated her approach with her mom by cell phone and the following video is what happened. I hope you like:

The reception was great, and among the many decorations and special touches was this table covered with pink and green candies to match the wedding colors.
I don't know how a blog post about Blaire and Jaylen's wedding would be complete without showcasing their cake:

Amber was the 2nd model I photographed at the shoot I did at 12 West a couple weeks ago. My friend Mresha Leger, who is an amazing make-up artist wanted to do some collaboration and portfolio work and helped me make the arrangements for this project. I had the opportunity to photograph some gorgeous wedding gowns for one of the valley's top wedding/evening gown designers Jennyvi Couture in preparation for Arizona Bridal Week.

Here is a little description of what Arizona Bridal Week is all about:

The eight-day event goes beyond the ordinary bridal expo, and presents the more fashionable side of the wedding industry. They were married 2 weeks ago among friends and family and surrounded by the beautiful pines at Torreon Country club outside of Show Low Arizona. It was a gorgeous day and I was thrilled for the opportunity to photograph another wedding of significant distance from the valley of the sun.

We all had a great time at the wedding. Bonnie was pretty sure she was going to prevent me from catching any "candid" shots of her. Here is a collage of all the pictures where I wasn't quite stealthy enough to sneak a candid:
The greatest example of this actually happened during the ceremony. As Michael struggled for a few seconds to extract the rings from the ringbearer's ribbon I took a few steps in to get a closer shot. Bonnie gave me a "peace-sign" and everybody laughed:

I am working on building my new website this week and as I was looking through the tens of thousands of images on my drives I came across this one from Tami & Ryne's Wedding and I had to share:

As we are finishing up some shots of the bridal party shortly after the ceremony I hear some of the groomsmen egging on one of the other groomsmen "come on! do some tricks!"

I'm tempted to put this image on my new website. What do you think?

Safety first...

It has been a while since I have done one of my random post that isn't about a photoshoot. In the digital photography world there is a saying: "an image doesn't exist until it exists in 2 places"

You'll have to forgive the very "flowchart" feel to the image above but I wanted to demonstrate how I do my best to keep images safe from every shoot that I do.
1) The very first copy of the image is going to exist on the memory card inside the camera. I have a ton of these things and they don't get cleared off until a job is completely processed, posted, and delivered.
2) The first thing I do when I get home from photographing anything (no matter how late it is) is to download the images on the cards to the computer. So now we have accomplished our goal right? The images now exist in 2 places so we are all done right? WRONG.
3) Connected to my computer is a sizable external hard drive that is set-up to mirror the hard drive on my computer. So as soon as I copy images from the cards to the computer that hard drive kicks on and start to copy the new image files from the computer to the external hard drive. (so now the images exist in 3 places)
4) Usually within a week of downloading the pictures I'll will have picked out the best images. I'll process, edit, and correct them and then they are ready to be uploaded for online viewing and ordering. I use Pictage as my print fulfillment and online previewing partner. My favorite thing about Pictage is that they keep high resolution copies of all my files on their servers indefinitely, this means that I if a freak hurricane strikes East Mesa, and my computer, memory cards, and external hard drive all get washed away I can still recover my images from Pictage as an offsite backup.

I've known Courtney and her family since she was in grade school and Reese's mom and my mom were best buds in high school. We went out and made some awesome images together down at Freestone park in Gilbert, AZ. Courtney owns and operates the hottest wedding/reception/event venue in Mesa called 12 WEST . This was such a fun one...they made us pay for a ticket to run the carousel in the background to get this shot, I think it was worth it though.

What an incredible way to celebrate Independence Day! Kristen and Josh got married on the 4th of July in Scottsdale at the Orange Tree Golf Resort. It was a gorgeous wedding and here are some of the highlights:

We began by taking some "get ready" shots:

This moment of the day is quickly becoming my favorite. There is a moment just as a bride is finishing getting ready and she realizes how incredible she looks. I think this image below is that moment for Kristen.

Since the ceremony was going to be a night time ceremony the couple decided to see each other before the ceremony so we could take some pictures. This was so fun because we got to capture that moment:

The reception was beautiful and the DJ (Eric "Hampton Cheroske of "Got You Covered") was incredible.

The Belnaps are friends of my family up in Pinetop. We took advantage of my trip up there for the wedding a couple weeks ago to get some family pictures done while I was in town.

When big brother got done posing along side this tree, little brother propped himself up there all on his own posing the same way...it was pretty stinkin cute!

This last image was my favorite because it's a little different setup than what I usually look for but I really like how the hard sunlight from the back creates a rim and almost frames the family.

I just love it when things work out. The day of Lillian and Blake's wedding the weather in and around Snowflake Arizona could not make up it's mind. Sunny, windy, full on raining, overcast and in the end things just worked out. The rain stopped, the wind died down and the hit and miss cloud cover made for dramatic lighting that we were able take full advantage of.

I LOVE this one...it was like heaven opened up on these guys and was smiling about what they were doing that day:

Grant has been on the other side of my lens a few times ( here, here ) We went out on an overcast afternoon with no real destination or plan and happened across an unlocked gate at falcon field so we played around an old airplane. It made for some great images!

Here is another beautiful LDS temple wedding that I got to photograph last week.

Sadi and Morgan are an adorable couple and were SO into each other. I love it when a couple is so into each other that they forget about me for a minute and I get some REAL moments. Here is the lovely bride and groom right after their ceremony had been completed

Sadi was rocking these awesome tennis shoes that matched her wedding colors and so I worked one of them in with the rings and the bouquet

This a shot that I'm told all the grandchildren do with grandpa on their wedding day.
I thought it was pretty cool, I don't usually get to incorporate shotguns in wedding photography:

We spent some time in my wife's hometown this last week and took the opportunity to do some pictures for her brother and his little family of four.

This little guy was calling me "uncle jelly bean" because I was bribing him to do stuff all week using "jellybeans" as incentive.

The times when we could get the pacifier away from this lil one were few a far between but when we did we managed to get some cute images.

Last Christmas I made my parents a photo book for Christmas and most of it was filled with images I had made over the previous year. I had a pretty good collection of snapshots, and good portraits I had taken of most everyone but Bradley, I only had one soccer picture and one silhouette I had taken as an experiment. You may remember these guys from a couple months back when I did their engagement images.
Their wedding day was amazing and I felt so lucky to be a part of it. I knew it was going to be an adventure as soon as I woke up that day as it was raining. The ceremony was at the Japanese friendship garden in Phoenix and it was still raining when we arrived to do some portraits before the ceremony but luckily they had this really sweet "ceremonial tea house" that we used until the rain stopped:

Then the rain stopped 15 minutes before the ceremony was to start so we took a few more portraits in the garden.

The ceremony was very special and had a super intimate feel to it as there were only 25 guests or so in attendance.

Oh how I love these real moments.

This was a part of the ceremony that I thought was pretty incredible. Corey and Christina combined a vase of white sand and a vase of black sand into one vessel in symbolism of becoming one and further that they can never be separated just as the white and the black sand can never be separated from each other once combined.

"You may kiss the bride" ( oh and did they ever smooch!)

"Here's My Card"

This is actually kind of cool. I ordered some new cards from a printing company called MOO. They let you upload as many images as you'd like (well up to 100) and then they'll print them as business cards

I chose to have the reverse side remain fairly plain and concise

I was really happy with how they came out and can't wait to start giving some of them out. Do you see any images from your shoot on the cards? Let me know if you want one/some. This seems to be a product that would appeal more to photographers than anyone else, but I thought I'd share.

Baby Winfield/ Mesa Arizona Baby Photographer

Baby Winfield had his own special portrait session today in studio. He was SUCH a good baby! You don't often find kiddos this old that can smile on cue (which made my job a whole lot easier).

As you can see he is quite flexible.

He stuck with it for well over a half hour and then decided to take a nap so we finished by taking some sleepy pictures.
